The 10-foot three-inch long nz is about six inches shorter and 100 pounds lighter than the V1, and nz models will be over $1,200 less than a comparable V1 price. The V1 is a good boot, but it is an old design that uses the tool originally created for the previous generation Waverunner VX.
The nz was specially developed for the new lightweight Yamaha TR-1/HO engine. For nz-duty, the compact, three-cylinder TR-1 is easily tuned by the 130 PS TR-1 ho, to about 100 horsepower, which is a good match for the size and weight of the nz platform. To fit under the nz-deck, the TR-1 has a smaller exhaust manifold and muffler than the TR-1 ho, which is used in the VX and some Yamaha sports boats. Former also presents a compact 144mm jet data which weighs about four pounds less and is about three inches shorter than*155mm data used in V1.
The nz hull and deck are smooth and shiny, formed with the same sheet-moulding compound (SMC) Composite method used to build other Waverunner models, although the nz is not used with the lightweight NanoXcel material Yamaha for its premium models Formed. To reduce weight, the nz has a narrow deck and slim-line one-piece seat that can easily be straddled for most riders. The molded plastic seat base remains attached to the deck to keep the seat brighter, and can be removed from the deck for motor service after loosening six screws. Lift-out containers for under-seat stowage and a fire nztinguisher also provide access to the engine for basic service, such as testing or changing the oil.
There is a shallow stowage compartment under a hood hatch that is really just deep enough to hold some dock lines. The glove box, however, is quite wide and deep and can hold several water bottles. The instrumentation is carried out via a small LCD screen below the non-adjustable handlebar. All nz models are rated for three passengers or 485 pounds and so in most states can be used for towing when equipped with mirrors. I had no chance to try an nz with a passenger, but I suspect this hull will be a little less stable than the larger VX, which has a passenger capacity of 529 pounds.
With my 185 pound on the seat, a pre-production nz zipped up to a top speed of about 50 mph. Power seems perfectly tuned to the size and weight of the tread, and the nz does not feel small. With regard to size and performance, the former later about 15 years with a first PwCs was very, very quickly, and very expensive. However, the nz benefits from the latest design technology. This hull provides a soft ride in Lake Chop and carves like a devil on smooth water without any hint of skidding or spinning. The TR-1 engine is smooth and quiet, and Yamaha says it delivers about 20 percent better fuel consumption than the MR-1 engine replaces. With a wide open choke (6800 rpm), the nz burns about 7.9 gallons per hour. Couple that with a very generous 13.5-gallon tank and they will ride a while between fill-ups.
The Waverunner nz offered in three flavors. Former base has only the basics. Former Sport ($7,599) adds (cable manual finalization reverse momentum, a step on re-entry, mirrors and more graphics with a selection of black or white basic colors. Former Deluxe ($8,599) represents the Yamaha ride reverse electronic/system braking, blue or Silver metallic color and basic two-tone.
