Without argument, the final revelation of the 2017 Kawasaki SX-R Jetski was the highly anticipated event in the four-plus-years release of the Watercraft journal. The Telltale spike in readership every time we shared a few morsel, each looking at the images, a lot of information was bloody like the blood of the water, the seas already mutilate with sharks.
A few months before the revelation, I had sent a handful of cell phone images of the fake SX-R secretly to me, including one of the engine, and another the pump and tray. Despite a personally turbulent relationship with standups, I also looked forward to seeing how the world would get the SX-R. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I had to “re-learn” how to drive, but I had to learn how the ‘ 17 SX-R wanted to be ridden.
April gave me the first taste of the SX-R 1500. Although most of us (the US media) had given half the day to ride, they could not make it more than half an hour. Determined not to make me before Fuzzy Boyd and Minuro Kanamori, who designed the ski, a (bigger) fool, I urged to continue driving. I think I may have 50 minutes of total travel time (most of it spent swimming back to the ski). Others went a little better.
Unlike the comparably outrageous 800 before, the 1500 hated slow speeds. Or at least it has hated me at slow speeds. The ride around 30-35 was fine, but everything was less, and it was tipsy, and by a lot. Yes, at the speed the SX-R was like a laser-controlled cruise missile. It did not migrate, and it definitely has not been slammed. And really, the only way it wanted to corner was with me as low as possible to double me forward over the handlebars, and my weight as far beyond the inside rail as possible.
This lesson alone was the hardest to learn. I had ridden the SX-R 1500 for about an hour in April and received my painters in mid-June. And quite honestly, I think I’ve ridden it maybe 3 different times this month. July and August were different. I’ve really tried to make sure I drive at least 25 minutes, three times a week. I did not only want to improve my skills, but to make myself more familiar with the Kawi.
I am 235-pound and 6 ‘ 2 ″; Not just the construction of a professional Standup racer in any way; At this point, I snarled to myself: “This thing was designed for jockeys ” and felt I would start to want to give up. With this advice I found out how the SX-R would like to bypass. Come quickly. Get in your arms. And get over that hood. Once I made the difference. And let me tell you, there is an amazing sense of gratification, a solid set of twists after weeks of failure to execute it. Don’t make me wrong, I wasn’t in any place to take on Dustin Motzouris, but at least I wasn’t going to hate driving.
Finally the feeling that it was fun again, we started with some other articles: the application of the velocity visions coating, the installation of a set of JC racing mid-sponsons, the filming of an episode of “Long haul ” on the ski and this sponsons (the Really made a difference). I was not back to my 3-time one-week program, but I tried to minimum for at least 3 or 4 times a month.
Then, in early September, while trying to climb back in deep water, my elbow slipped on the cannon and I planted myself hard in the smooth, painted surface that rips backwards. Thankfully, my flying racing helmet of thousands of dollars kept me in dental work. Then she sat. I would say for at least a month. It saw water a handful more times between returning home from the world final and returning to Kawasaki late last week.

I think this review is not for you hardcore Standup guys. You always drive whether it’s Glazig or nothing else than white trash. You’d rather stop than sit. I understand. That’s cool. This is more for everyone, and I can’t help thinking that Kawasaki has built something that really isn’t meant for everyone else. The SX-R is an outward reminder that the days of throwing a pair of 550s and an outdoor crate are gone in the bed of your Toyota. The SX-R is not the light, playful dirt bike-for-the-water, which is reminiscent of a jet-ski creature. This is your own animal.
That said, I still like it, but I wish I loved it (if that makes sense). With $9,999, it’s the best jetski that Kawasaki could build for such a low price and as fast as they could. I personally would like the SX-R to stick around for a long time, because I’m curious how the aftermarket, the racers and a wider public embrace him. Hopefully the development of the market place will bring us a tamer ski for us less experienced riders. But right now, this sport needs a Standup jetski from Kawasaki and I’m glad you’re back.
